We
do have to say that this has to be the craziest food cost year
we can remember in our twenty one years. The craziness started
this past January during the big Detroit Auto Show. What does
Detroit have to do with the price of your morning bagel? The
day after the show opened, grain prices DOUBLED based on speculation
that the new cars designed for bio-fuels would
greatly increase demand for corn. Grain price increases
also meant that beef, dairy, chicken, turkey, eggs and pork
prices hikes would soon follow. And so they did along with
coffee, paper, and just about everything else.
Believe
us when we say that we hate price raises just as much as you
do! But there’s no going backwards in business. Food
and the people who make, bake and serve are restaurants’number
one and two largest costs. We absorb all kinds of price raises
on all kinds of services and items, but never on food or labor.
We must share them with you, dear customer. Sometimes we look
at our daily board and don’t recognize our prices…
As
the title of this little article says, we have remained true
to ourselves. We have spent years working on sourcing excellent
quality ingredients and no recession will change that. Our
chicken, beef, eggs are still drug free, veg fed and are raised
in more humane conditions. We have fun with fresh veggies –butternut
squash, fennel, chard, jicama, broccoli, English peas, and
carrots (to name a few) are either permanent residents on our
menu or regular guest stars. Your complimentary roll served
with real butter is still made fresh daily and the 9-Grain
bread with whole grains and seeds is still a meal unto itself.
So
no matter what happens to food costs, the stock market, and
the world at large, here at Flying Star you can count on us.
We’ll still be baking, cooking and roasting. Our wish
for you is that your Holidays are peaceful, bright and that
your 401Ks return to their full value. Thank you for your trust
in us.
